Observations and Questions:
Creation:
Day 1: light---Without the sun, "day" and "night"
Day 2: separated the waters of the heavens and the waters of the earth creating "sky"
Day 3: sea and land, sea to one place-one body of water, land produces seed-bearing plants and fruits
Day 4: lights to separate day and night, two great lights to mark day, night, seasons, days, years: one larger to govern the day (sun) and smaller on to govern the night (moon), stars
Day 5: fish, birds, other sea creatures
Day 6: land creatures, humans
Day 7: rested
No wild plants or grains were growing on the Earth, because of no rain of farmers-Genesis 2:5
springs watered the ground-Genesis 2:6
Man-
--only thing with the breath of life
--made from dust
Eden came after Adam--Genesis 2:8
Genesis 2:19--God knew that Adam would partner with him, Adam chose the names of creatures
Woman was not made from dirt.
Eden:
Tree of life and the Tree of Knowledge in the center of the garden
River split into four branches
--Pishon-flowed around Havilah, where exceptionally pure gold was found, onyx stone and resin, too
--Gihon-flowed around Cush
--Tigris-flowed east of Asshur
--Euphrates
Eden was given to man to tend
Eve wasn't freaked out by the snake talking to her:
--Did animals speak?
--Did humans have the capability to use their whole mind, and they could read thoughts?
Temptation:
--Starts with a contradiction- "Did God really?"
--Progresses to doubt- "You won't really die."
--Further to greed- they wanted the wisdom
Adam was with Eve - Genesis 3:6
Curses:
--Serpent-crawl on belly---Did it have legs?
--Woman-pain in pregnancy, pain in childbirth, man will rule over woman--God doesn't say "cursed"
--Man-dust to dust-death, work for food, ground is cursed-Weeds?- man is not cursed, only the ground
Tree of knowledge gave knowledge of good and evil, just not in the way Adam and Eve wanted.
Tree of life- would they live forever, even after eating from the other tree? Bill Johnson-maybe the tree of life just made the condition eternal, meaning their sin would be unforgivable.
The Angel that was sent to guard the East of Eden with the flaming sword was not an archangel but a cherubim.
Cain and Abel
Cain-worked the ground
Abel-shepherd
The offering to God
--Cain brought some crops
--Abel brought firstborn lambs--FORESHADOWING
If Cain had brought his best, his true work would have showed, because he would have labored, but he didn't bring his best.
Cain cursed with inability to grow things.
Giant were on the earth-Genesis 6:4
Noah
Noah was the only blameless man in Earth- he was still human, which means the other people on Earth must have been really bad.
Noah never seemed to question the need from the ark, despite the fact that there had never been a flood.
Creatures on the Ark
--seven pairs of clean animals
--one pair of unclean animals
--seven pairs of each bird
The Flood
Underground water erupted from the earth and rain fell
Water was 22 feet above the highest peak
Waters covered the earth for 150 days
Wind made the waters recede
Raven released--returned
Dove released--returned
Dove released seven days later--returned with an olive leaf
Dove released another seven days later--did not return
God gives the animals to Noah as food after the flood
Tower of Babel
Before-all spoke the same language
People moved east to plain of Babylonia.
Intent of the tower-be famous and not be separated
This was disobeying the command to go into the world
Abraham and Sarah
Genesis 18:1-15
Sarah is promised a Son
v.2: Abraham ran to the visitors. Running was not something someone like Abraham did
Abraham talked to God in the familiar
The three men were God and two angels
Abraham lied to two different kings about being married to Sarah, both of which found out from God that Abraham had lied.
Abimelech, the second king, God tells him he's a dead man for taking a married woman, even though he was deceived.
