At the beginning of Numbers, there was a census taken of the men who were 20 or older and could go to war, which did not include the Levites, and the number was 603,550.

Twelve spies were sent into the Promised Land. Ten returned with horror stories, while Joshua and Caleb returned with a call to action, to take the land destined for them.
